Blueberries Top Superfood for Women.
I just read this in Natural Products Marketplace and I think it is terrific…especially since blueberries pack such a health punch and only contain a very skinny 60 calories per cup!
Health magazine named Wild Blueberries as number two on its list of “America’s Healthiest Superfoods for Women.” The feature, running in the magazine’s January/February 2010 issue, singled out Wild Blueberries’ impressive variety of potential health benefits, including preventing memory loss, improving motor skills, lowering blood pressure and fighting wrinkles.
The article states: “If berries are nutritional treasures, Wild Blueberries are the crown jewels…truly one of nature’s ultimate anti-aging foods.” Health editors recommend readers mix Wild Blueberries with their daily berries servings “as much as possible” for their many health benefits, and point readers to the frozen fruit aisle of supermarkets for the healthy frozen version available every season of the year.
According to the Wild Blueberry Association of North America, the wild blue treats have a higher level of antioxidants than most other fruits and may help boost immune systems and help guard against cell damage associated with cancer, heart disease, damage from stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, and the effects of aging for both men and women.
Five Ways to Add Blueberries to Your Daily Diet, Fast!
1. Toss a handful of blueberries on top of your morning oatmeal for extra fiber and antioxidant benefits.
2. Layer a 1/2 cup of blueberries with a sugar-free vanilla pudding (approx 100 calories) for a beautiful, deliciously sweet, and healthy dessert or snack (I love this as a bedtime snack)
3. Mix up a powerful berry fruit cup by tossing together a 1/2 cup of blueberries, 1/4 cup of raspberries, 1/4 cup of strawberries (sliced) with a little Splenda with fiber for a total of about 100 super healthy, diet-friendly calories–dig in and enjoy!
4. Add 1/2 cup blueberries to your favorite salad for extra nutrition, color, and health benefits.
5. Blend a 1/2 cup of blueberries with 1 small banana, 1/2 cup of vanilla frozen yogurt or 6 ounces of nonfat vanilla yogurt and a little Splenda with fiber. Pour into your prettiest glass and enjoy this wonderful healthy treat!
